"Uglies", "Pretties", and "Specials"

I just read a trilogy by Scott Westerfeld. The books are entitled: "Uglies", "Pretties", and "Specials". After reading "East of Eden", these books will definitely be classified as "Brain Candy". They were a very easy, and quite enjoyable read. The story takes place in the future after the "Rusties" have all died off--- Rusties meaning us. In this world, when you are younger than 12 years old you are called 'littlies' and you live with your parents. When you turn 12 you move to dorms-like places--- at least that is what I compared it to--- where you live with people your age and are called 'uglies'. You are an 'ugly' until you turn 16 years old. On your 16th birthday, everyone is given an operation which makes you beautiful and you live on the 'pretty' side of town and get to party all the time. Tally is the main character and she is just about to turn 16 when she meets Shay. Shay tells her about a whole new world where people have run away before their 16th birthday and live in a place called "The Smoke" to avoid the operation. I don't want to give anything away, so I won't give any more details about the story line. I really enjoyed these books and would highly recommend them. However, just as a warning, there is bit of environmental stuff in the books, but unless you are pretty touchy I don't think it will bother you.

Also, there is a fourth book in the series that takes place a few years later. The main characters in the first three aren't the main characters in the last one, but they are still part of the book. The fourth one was my least my favorite, but it was still a good read.

My first Book Review!

I have seen a couple of blogs where people wrote up Book Reviews for books they read in 2008. I thought it was a really good idea and I really enjoyed reading them so I decided to do something similar. However, instead of waiting until the end of the year I decided I would do it as I go along. Maybe it will make me blog more often!

The first book I read this year is "East of Eden" by John Steinbeck. It took me FOREVER to read. I made a goal to read more Classics and more non-fiction books this year and this was the first attempt at my goal. I chose it because my brother Sam kept telling me how great a book it was and kept asking if I had read it yet. I would tell you what it is about- but it is really complicated. It takes place before and during World War 1 and most of the story takes place in Salinas, California. I can't tell you if whether or not I liked the book because honestly, I don't know. While I was reading it I was really frustrated because it was depressing and I hate depressing books! But now that I look back it is interesting to think about the characters and what Steinbeck was trying to do. My favorite character was probably Cal even though he was the "bad" twin. One of his struggles in life was that he felt he was bad because his mom was bad and it had carried on to him. He didn't want to be bad, but he just was. It took a lot of effort for him to be "good" and sometimes he gave into his "bad" instincts. His character is probably the one I related to most because I think we all have "bad" in us that we have to overcome and even though it is hard and sometimes seems unfair, we can still do it. Aron on the other hand was the "good" twin that everybody liked. It was interesting how, in my opinion, Steinbeck made the reader like Cal better than Aron. Maybe it was because more of the book was from Cal's point of view rather than Aron's. But even in the book, Aron's own girlfriend didn't like him much because he was too good, or at least he thought he was, and he expected everybody else and everything in his life to be the same.

Anyway, I would recommend this book if you are a fan of Classics and like to analyze books or find a deeper meaning. It definitely wasn't "brain candy" as Debbie would say, but not many Classics are. It took me awhile to read--- it is about 600 hundred pages I think. In 1981 they made an 8 hour mini TV series that I would like to get my hands on, but I haven't had the opportunity yet.

So there is my first book review. A little long and kind of boring I know. But at least I have a new blog!

General Conference

Every year I have the goal to read all of the General Conference talks from last time before we are back in session six months later. Often times, in fact, most times, it doesn't quite happen. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMY!!!

I just want to wish Amy a Happy 24th Birthday! We have been best friends since we were 7 years old, so you may say that I know Amy pretty well! Here is a very abridged story of our friendship: We met in Primary at Church and have been pretty much inseparable since then. We went to different Elementary schools and to different Middle schools, but were always talking about the days when we could go to high school together. Our Freshman year was a blast, but sadly, my family moved to Utah the summer after our Freshman year. That really sucked, but we still stayed in touch and went back and forth and visited each other and dreamt about the days we would go to college together! Luckily, that lasted a little longer. We were roommates pretty much throughout all of our college days and had TONS of fun! Then she got married and a few months later I got married, and now we live two hours apart. I am still rooting for Chris to go to the UofU so they won’t be moving too far away, but we will see how that goes. Anyway, no matter how close or far away we live from each other, our friendship has gone on strong! I have been through soooo much with Amy and we have had some really awesome times together. She is one of my very favorite people in the world! She is so fun and such a good, kind, caring person!

At the risk of Amy killing me, here are some pictures of us when we were younger. Yes, we were both kind of chubby for a couple years there… But you all will probably get some laughs! Don’t judge us, this was YEARS ago! I think I have more to be embarrassed about than Amy.

Update and a Tag

I thought I would give an update since my last depressing blog. First of all, we finally found out what Travis is charged with in regard to the elk and we were so, so blessed! The fish and game officer and the prosecutor were VERY merciful because they knew that what happened was an accident, so the only thing Trav gets is a charge of $217.00! Amazing since it could have been sooo much worse! Also, Travis's Aunt ended up dying soon after I posted my last blog and her funeral was a couple weeks ago. It was very sad and I am going to miss her a lot. At her funeral I kept thinking about why she was able to survive her first bout of cancer only to die a few weeks later and I decided that one of the reasons was so that I could get to know her because I had never gotten the chance to do so. I am grateful I got that chance. She really was a great lady.

On a brighter note, I got to take a whole week off of work to go deer hunting/camping. Cathy posted some pictures- if you haven't seen them you should go look at them. I got my first deer! Whoohoo! It is a tiny little one, so it's not much to brag about. But, the part I am proud of is I shot it perfectly so it didn't have to suffer and we have meat in our freezer again! That's always nice. And it was really nice to be able to take the week off and spend time with family and friends. I actually really enjoy it!

The worst weekend ever and a tag!

This weekend was NOT a fun weekend for us. It has been one bad thing after another. First of all, Travis has been elk hunting the past week or so and has been pretty frustrated because he had been working his tail off and hadn’t seen a bull elk. On Saturday the weather was bad and apparently that is when the elk start moving around so you have more of a chance of seeing one. Anyway, Trav, his dad, his buddy, Willy, all went up to Morgan and hunted land that one of Willy’s roommates had given them permission to hunt because his parents owned it. So, they went up there and to make a long story not as long, had a great hunt, called in an elk and Travis shot it. It was a 6x7 and definitely the biggest thing Travis had ever shot and he was obviously very excited, especially because we are officially out of meat and this elk was so big it would have completely filled our freezer. Anyway, soon after he shot the elk, the Fish & Game came up and informed them that they were hunting on CWMU ground which is a HUGE problem and is considered poaching. They took the elk, took his gun along with Willy’s and his dad’s guns and told him he would be notified of what action would be taken. We are fully expecting Travis to be charged with poaching which is a $2,000.00 fine, possible jail time, and NO HUNTING OF ANY KIND FOR FIVE YEARS! For all of you who know Travis, this is not good. We are hoping that the other two aren’t charged with such severe charges because it was Travis who tagged the elk and such, but we have no clue what will happen. As you can imagine, they were all furious at Willy’s roommate and called him up to see what was going on. He was just like, "Oh, sorry. That sucks." The Fish & Game officer informed them that the roommate actually owns a very small piece of land no where near where they were hunting. The roommate had actually taken them up there and shown him what land he "owned". What an idiot. Then, they had to call Trav’s mom to come pick them up because the road was too muddy to drive their truck down and when his mom got there she informed them that Travis’s Aunt, Jim’s sister, had cancer in the brain and spine and would most likely not survive much longer. Jim is her medical power of attorney so he has to be the one to make all the decisions which puts a lot of pressure on him and leaves Trav to run the shop. He is very capable of doing that, it just adds extra responsibility and stress, but he is obviously more than willing to help. Anyway, to top off everything, this morning Travis’s car broke down. What fun!

HUSBAND TAG!

I figured since I haven't posted a blog in over a month and I was tagged in this Husband Tag thing, I should probably spend a little bit of time and do it! I like looking at other blogs, but when it comes to adding posts to my own I can't think of anything to write about that anyone else would want to read. So, I was actually kind of glad when Amy tagged me! It gave me a topic to write about! And it is one of my favorite topics! My husband is my best friend and I am so lucky to be able to be married to him. Anyway, here goes:

1- Where did you meet? Travis and I actually met in High School. Yes, we were high school sweethearts. We went to school together our sophomore, junior and senior years, but we never actually met until our senior year in Government class. The teacher based the seating chart by our last names and since my maiden name is Cardon and his last name is obviously Burton we sat next to each other. A couple weeks into the class, the teacher changed the seating chart because we talked too much and put us across the room from each other. It was pretty funny because whenever we got into trouble for talking he would always blame Travis because the teacher said I was too good of a kid to get into trouble and Travis was a troublemaker! Haha! I had a crush on Travis soon after I met him, but he liked another girl and would tell me about her. Sad... but it only took a few months for him to realize I was the one for him!

2- How long did you date before you were married? Well, this is kind of a tricky question for us. We started dating on October 22, 2002 which was during our senior year of high school. But when we graduated from high school I went off to BYU and he stayed in Brigham City to work. We didn’t break up when I moved, but we had some rocky times and broke up for a few days here and there a couple of times. But, we worked everything out and when I came home for the summer we had a lot of fun until he left for his mission on August 18, 2004. He was gone for two years (obviously). I didn’t want to "wait" for him so I dated a couple of people while he was gone. I had one pretty serious boyfriend during that time, but dating him made me realize how much I really loved Travis and wanted to marry him. So, when he came home on August 22, 2006 we immediately picked up where we left off and were married in January of 2007. So... we knew each other for over 4 years when we got married, but we didn’t date that whole time due to college, his mission, etc.

3- How long have you been married for? 1 year and 7 months.

4- What does he do that surprises you? Hmmm... this is kind of a hard one. Let’s see, one of the first surprises after we got married occurred the first night we were in our apartment. We had boxes everywhere of all of our stuff because we couldn’t move in until the day we got married so we obviously didn’t get a whole lot done beforehand and we had opened all of our presents earlier that day. Anyway, he did not go to bed until everything was unpacked and put away and the pictures were hung on the wall. Seriously. I couldn’t believe it. I wanted to go to sleep and he was up unpacking and banging holes in the wall to hang pictures.

5- What's your favorite feature about him? Probably his eyes. He has really pretty green eyes and they change color quite often. I also love his hands. I don’t really know why. I guess because his hands are a sign of how hard he works. That sounds weird, I know.

6- What's your favorite quality about him? He is the hardest worker I know. He grew up in a home where hard work was expected of him. Since we got married he has been going to school and working. For the last few months he has been working from 5-4 and then goes to school from 5-10 over in Logan so he has really long days. I also love that he always does the dishes! What a sweetheart! I HATE doing the dishes so he does it for me.

7- Does he have a nickname for you? What is it? Baby, Babe, Hunz or Huney

8- What's his favorite color? Green or Orange or Camo

9- What's his favorite food? His mom’s sweet and sour chicken and pizza!

10-What is his favorite sport? Football and Basketball

11- Who said I love you first? Him. He told me the day after we graduated from high school. I think he waited until then because before we started dating I once told him I didn’t think you could fall in love in high school. I later changed my mind about that, but he waited until we were done with high school to tell me he loved me!

12- When and where was your first kiss? November 4, 2002 on my front porch!

13-What are your favorite things to do as a couple? Probably hike, camp and be outdoors.

14-Do you have kids? How many? Not yet, but we do want some in the future!

15- What's a hidden talent that he has? He actually has a really good voice. I love hearing him sing, but he rarely ever does! Especially if he knows he is being listened to. He is also a really good cook.

16- How old is he? 23. Yes, he is younger than me by 9 months.

17- What's his favorite type of music? He pretty much listens to anything except things he thinks are cheesy. He doesn’t like a lot of my girl music.

18- What do you admire most about him? His integrity. He is one of the most honest people I know. Also, he never gets mad at me. Even if I do something really stupid, he says, "Oh well," and forgets about it. I really need to work on that. Sometimes I think I nag at him way too much and get mad at him for little things he does way too much. Even if we disagree about something, the minute it gets a little bit heated he will stop and wait until later to finish the discussion. That’s a really good trait for my husband because I can get pretty heated and argue forever.

19-What's his favorite past time(s)? Hunting. I swear, it is getting to the point that there is always SOMETHING he could be hunting/fishing for. And if not, there is always scouting or researching for hunts coming up. I really can’t complain though because it keeps us physically active and gives us good food to eat! Since we have been married the only meat we have bought is turkey steak. Everything else comes from his hunting ability. It’s pretty sweet.

20- Do you think he is going to read this? Nope.
